For CTOs, CISOs, architects, and implementers
Identity establishes who is authorized. Existence establishes whether that known participant is present now.
Existing identity, authentication, authorization, and role systems remain responsible for who may act. Existence adds a separate present-tense condition before selected protected actions proceed.
The unresolved condition
A valid session does not establish current participation.
Credentials may be valid. The device may be recognized. Authorization may be correct. The session may remain active. Those conditions describe authority established earlier.
They do not independently establish that the known participant is present when the next protected action is requested.
Integration
The correction is added where consequence occurs.
verify_existence(...)The organization identifies selected protected functions and requests the current existence result before execution. Existing RBAC, application logic, workflow, and business policy remain authoritative.
Retained infrastructure
Nothing already relied upon must be replaced merely to begin.
The organization keeps its directory, identity systems, applications, operating systems, roles, permissions, workflows, protected data, and network ownership.
Existence adds governed EAIDs, assigned runtime authority, continuous validation, independent presence determination, an organization-controlled Beacon, and current verification at selected consequences.
Separation and custody
Trust determination remains independent from protected interaction.
Channel A establishes authority, validates participation, determines presence, and signals collapse. Channel B carries the organization’s application activity and protected content.
The organization controls its Existence Beacon, presence policy, session history, operational records, and evidence. Protected content does not need to be surrendered for trust enforcement.
Volatile authority
Current authority must remain current.
Runtime session authority is intentionally volatile. Presence must continue to be renewed through active validation. If required session or presence conditions fail, trusted continuation collapses rather than persisting on historical authority.
Collapse is part of the trust model, not an interface error added afterward.
