A scientific finding about digital participation

A system can know who was authorized without knowing whether that person is present now.

Digital systems can validate identity, credentials, devices, permission, and an active session. Each establishes an important fact. None independently establishes that the known authorized participant is present when the next protected action is decided.

Existence Authentication is the implemented research method through which Existence-as-a-Factor establishes Channel A and makes absence verifiable at selected decision points. Credentials, authentication, authorization, applications, and ordinary network activity remain in Channel B.

Follow the question

The original decision was rational.

Early digital systems needed a practical way to continue interaction after access was granted. Credentials were accepted, authority was issued, and the session proceeded. Given the technology and operating conditions of the time, that was a reasonable decision.

What began as a practical solution became an inherited assumption: authority established earlier was allowed to stand in for the participant’s continued presence.

Every protected action already reaches a bifurcation.

Before a consequential action occurs, the system must permit it or refuse it. Identity, permission, and an active session may all be valid. The remaining question is whether the known authorized participant is present at that moment.

Continue according to organizational policy.

ABSENT

Make the other decision.

The correction belongs at the decision point.

Detection after an action may help an organization respond. It cannot prevent an action that has already crossed the boundary. If the uncertainty exists when the decision is made, the corrective fact must be available at that same decision.

verify_existence(...)

A selected protected action asks for the current existence determination before it executes. If the required condition is absent, the action does not proceed.

The consequence changes more than the infrastructure.

No existing infrastructure has to be replaced. The organization keeps its identity systems, applications, permissions, workflows, data, operating systems, and policy. It adds an independently maintained existence relationship and requests the current result at selected protected decisions.

Existence supplies a current fact. The organization remains responsible for knowing its people, assigning authority, defining consequences, and deciding what must stop when absence is returned.

The relationship has been built and can be examined.

The implemented system establishes fresh runtime authority, continuously validates participation, independently determines presence, records the operating relationship, and ends trusted continuation when required conditions fail.

That is a bounded operational statement—not a claim that every cybersecurity problem has been solved.
